After two hearings on the subject, the Enterprise Board of Education approved a $60.6 million budget Sept. 12.
Chief School Financial Officer Brian Stewart gave a detailed breakdown of the budget during each of the two hearings, and his comments can be read in the online article “EBOE estimates $60.6 million budget for 2014” at www.southeastsun.com.
In other news, board members agreed to extend the time period in which applications for the superintendent position can be submitted.
The job opening was officially posted on July 26, and the 30 days of required legal notice ended on Aug. 26.
“We’ve gone through the time period, but it turned out there were several interested in the position that didn’t make the cutoff,” Interim Superintendent Jimmy Baker said. “I think, in order to make the pool as large as possible, we should extend the deadline for a period of time.”
The board agreed to continue accepting applications for the position until Sept. 30.
Baker said approximately 18 applications have been successfully submitted, and about five interested parties didn’t make Aug. 26 cutoff.
“As I said before, I don’t want time to be a consideration,” board member Bert Barr said. “If it takes an extra two weeks, it takes an extra two weeks.”
Board member Doug Vickers said no background checks have begun on the applications submitted so far.
“We haven’t been involved with those who’ve already applied, and I just wanted to make that clear,” Vickers said. “We just want to make sure those who wish to can apply.”
In other news, the board appointed Audrey McMillin to the position of principal at Pinedale Elementary School.
McMillin is currently the assistant principal at Rucker Boulevard Elementary School and will take the helm at Pinedale as of Sept. 16.
