The Coffee County Extension Office is trying to revive the lost art of southern storytelling by bringing local storytellers, breeze shooters and historians alike to the Enterprise Civic Center, Oct. 25.
Storytellers begins at 6 p.m., and the Extension Office asks that guests RSVP by Oct. 23.
The cost of admission is $5 and will cover entrance to the event and a meal, with all proceeds going to the Enterprise Senior Center.
Matt Brunson, son of Enterprise author Marion Brunson, will be telling some of his family’s stories and will be joined by Darrell Campbell of the Wiregrass Ghost Hunters and many others.
“We’re going to have speakers from the east, west, north and the south… of Coffee County that is,” said Peggy Stroud of the Coffee County Extension. “Story telling is a lost art among the young people.”
An avid storyteller herself, Stroud said passing stories down from generation to generation is an important part of a region’s history.
“We always encourage older adults to write down their stories and share them with the younger generations,” she said. “That way they’ll have stories about their grandparents and the olden days.”
Similar events have been held in other counties in the Wiregrass area, including the Pike Piddlers Storytelling Festival in Troy, which has seen quite a bit of success during the past few years.
According to Stroud, Coffee County 4-H students have participated in storytelling competitions over the past five years, and two of the current students will share their stories during the event.
“Both of these children won first place in their age group,” Stroud said.
According to Stroud, there will be a variety of stories to hear including some funny, scary and historical tales.
“Most time the stories people tell are about people they’ve met or places they’ve been,” she said. “Some of the stories were passed down by the (storyteller’s) ancestors, from generation to generation.”
