With the holiday season officially here, the Lovely Touch Garden Club invites Daleville residents to put up lights and decorations outside their homes and businesses in order to light up Daleville and make the city shine.
Every year, the Lovely Touch Garden Club sponsors the Light Up Daleville contest to inspire residents and businesses to put holiday decorations and help beautify the city.
"The whole goal is to try to encourage people to beautify our neighborhoods and our city for the month of December," Lovely Touch Garden Club president Lela Smith said. "It's pride in the community, in our city and in your neighborhood."
Smith said the contest has been going on for at least 10 years and encourages a fun competition between homeowners and businesses.
The judging for this year's contest will take place Dec. 12 after 6 p.m., so all displays must be lighted and visible from the adjoining roadway.
Judges will drive through the city to find first and second place winners in three categories: best overall business, most appealing to children and best overall home decoration.
Smith asks residents and business owners to please come up with a theme or story.
"Some people put a few lights and that's it, but that doesn't really tell a story," she said. "You can do snowmen, Santa Claus, reindeer, music playing, baby Jesus, trees, anything for the beautification of your yard, your neighborhood and your city."
Smith also asks that residents with any out-of-the-way or hard-to-find properties to please provide clear directions to the judges.
Residents can call Smith at 598-6475 or Jeanette Locks at 598-2311 to nominate a home or business or to make sure no one is overlooked.
All entries must be within the Daleville city limits.
The winners will be announced and given an award at the Daleville City Council meeting at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 17 at Daleville City Hall.
