An Elba man was arrested June 29 after he allegedly tried to pass narcotics to another individual in the restroom of Avenue 6 in Daleville.

Jose Miguel Baez-Santiago, 28, was in the nightclub at about 2:30 a.m. when security guards said they saw him and another gentleman passing what appeared to be cocaine back and forth in the bathroom.

Daleville Police Department investigator Sgt. Stacey Austin said officers responded to the scene at about 3 a.m. for a suspicious circumstance and made contact with the suspect.

Austin said when Baez-Santiago was questioned about a white substance in his pocket, he tried to pass it off to someone he was with.

Austin said Daleville Public Safety officer Noah Suiter saw the attempt, grabbed the substance from him and placed Baez-Santiago under arrest for possession of a controlled substance.

Once the suspect was in handcuffs, Austin said Baez-Santiago fled on foot across the parking lot. Suiter told Baez-Santiago to stop several times, but he refused.

Austin said Suiter deployed his taser and the suspect hit the ground.

The suspect was asked if he would like to seek medical treatment, but he refused.

Baez-Santiago was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and third-degree escape.

He was transported to the Dale County Jail June 29, and was released on July 1 under a $20,000 bond.
