The Level Plains City Council approved $15,530 toward the cost of repairing a sewer pumping station during a May 7 meeting.
According to Mayor Bruce Grantham, the system malfunctioned on May 5 and during the repair the city opted to replace the old one-phase motor with a new three-phase motor.
In other business, Level Plains Police Chief Lanice Bonds gave a progress report to the council members on the ongoing search for a new police cruiser.
The Dale County Sheriff’s Office has recently decommissioned two Ford Crown Victorias, which Bonds requested the use of through the Dale County Commission.
According to Bonds, Dale County Sheriff’s deputies are in the process of switching to Chevrolet Tahoes and don’t have use for the older-model Crown Victorias.
The Dale County Commission will meet May 13 and could potentially repurpose the vehicles at that time.
However, Bonds said there are no guarantees his request will be approved.
The council also approved the repair of the police department’s Dodge Charger, which is having trouble with an oil leak.
Those repairs will be covered under the vehicle’s warranty.
In other business, Grantham approved a request to send councilmembers Gregory Eldridge and Edward Berry to a Certified Municipal Official seminar sponsored by the Alabama League of Municipalities in Montgomery, May 21.
At a cost of only $120 plus travel expenses, the request was under the $500 limit of city expenditures allowed without council approval.
The council then agreed to discuss increasing the maximum amount of city funds Grantham can approve at its next meeting.
“The economy has changed,” said councilmember Ronnie Thompson, who proposed the idea. “You can’t buy much with $500 these days.”
If the council agrees to raise the maximum amount, it would prevent several special-called meetings, which the council has had to use in the past to approve relatively small purchases.
The council also agreed to send Bonds to the Police Chiefs’ Summer Conference, July 29-31, in Gulf Shores, Ala.
The Level Plains City Council will meet again at 6 p.m., May 21, at the Level Plains Community Center.
A town-hall meeting will follow the regular meeting, giving citizens an opportunity to directly address their concerns to Grantham and the council.
Refreshments will be provided.
