First responders and representatives from the Coffee County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) visited Harrand Creek Elementary School on Thursday, Aug. 11.
CERT Director Scotty Johnson said it was important for children to get to know local first responders so they will not be scared of them.
“They can go up to a policeman, a fireman or a rescue person and say, 'Hey, I need help,'” Johnson said. “Or they see them on the street and just thank them for what they do.”
Johnson said the theme for the 2016 Emergency Preparedness Fair, cosponsored by the Coffee County Emergency Management Agency, is “Honoring Our First Responders.”
"These people put their lives on the line everyday for us," Johnson said.
During the Emergency Preparedness Fair, children will be able to take part in a poster contest where they will create a poster for their favorite first responder, according to Johnson. He said they would also be able to take part in a scavenger hunt involving each booth at the fair.
"One of the booths this year is going to be the Junior Firefighter Challenge, where they're going to be able to pull a fire hose and do some things on their level," Johnson said.
Other displays during the fair will include the Arrive Alive display, first featured during last year's fair. The display simulates a scenario of drunk driving or texting and driving.
"It's a great opportunity just to come out and support our first responders," Johnson said. "(There is) a lot of neat things to do, a lot of fun things for the kids. We'll probably have a helicopter there, too."
The Emergency Preparedness Fair will be held at the Enterprise Civic Center on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
