The city of Enterprise is continuing to work on upgrades at the Enterprise Municipal Airport.
During a Aug. 20 city council meeting, councilmembers approved a motion to allow city officials to apply for a $250,000 grant through the Federal Aviation Administration.
The grant, which if approved would require a 5 percent match from the state and a 5 percent match from the city, would fund the addition of an automated weather radar system.
The automated system would transfer information pertaining to the on-ground weather conditions to incoming aircraft.
Other nearby airports have similar systems including Troy, Dothan, Montgomery and Auburn.
The improvement will help assist the city in its continued efforts to upgrade and expand the airport.
Enterprise Mayor Kenneth Boswell said the city should be notified if the grant is approved within 60 days.
In other news, Enterprise Police Chief T.D. Jones requested permission to post signs at all entrances to city hall prohibiting firearms on the premises.
Jones said posting the signs falls in line with the new firearms act recently passed by the Alabama Legislature.
City attorney Rainer Cotter said the city is working on getting signs prohibiting guns posted on all public city buildings.
"The firearms law allows the business to decide whether they'll allow firearms inside or not," Jones said. "If a business owner tells someone they need to go outside and they're not welcome in the building with a firearm and they don't leave, the police can be called and that person can be arrested."
Councilmembers unanimously approved the motion to allow signs to be posted at city hall entrances.
The next Enterprise City Council meeting is at 6 p.m., Sept. 3, at city hall.

Enterprise Podunk airport need T-hangars far more than a weather reporting system. The least user friendly airport in Southeast Alabama.
