Enterprise City Schools celebrated the end of its 2013 Summer S.M.A.R.T.S. (Students in Math and Reading Targeted for Success) program on June 28 with musical a presentation for parents at Hillcrest Elementary School.
According to Federal Programs Director Oveta Pearce, the Summer S.M.A.R.T.S. program is an extended learning opportunity that helps bridge learning through the summer months and into the next school year.
The four-week program targets the subjects of reading and math for kindergarten through the sixth graders. Additionally, one of the most important components of the program is an opportunity for pre-kindergarteners to transition into the school atmosphere.
This year’s theme, “Roundin’ Up Great Students,” had a country-western flair, and students performed several songs in cowboy hats and bandanas during the finale celebration.
In reading this year, students studied different countries and cultures, while strengthening their vocabulary, oral reading fluency and reading comprehension skills. In the area of math, specific modules were taught to build and strengthen the students’ basic math skills.
Teachers and paraprofessionals from each of the system’s elementary schools helped instruct the program.
Though the program is meant to continue learning, students were are also able to participate in several fun activities during the program. In addition to eighteen days of intense instruction, Summer S.M.A.R.T.S. also provides a variety of enrichment actives, such as this year’s “Hee Haw Water Day.”
Pre-K and kindergarten students presented the finale in the Hillcrest Elementary cafetorium.
Classroom celebrations were also held for the parents of students in grades 1-6, which included displays of student work, skits and special presentations.
Each parent was also given a report of his or her child’s progress during the program.
