The Coffee County Sheriff's Office initially answered the call of a dead body County Road 606 in Enterprise, which was later identified to be Robert Jonathan Crates, 33, of Enterprise, on Monday, Oct. 5.
The investigation has since been turned over to Alabama State Troopers.
A crash report reveals that a single vehicle of unknown make, model or year was involved in a collision with Crates the night of his death.
The collision occurred on CR 606, which is classified as a dark, not lighted roadway, with Crates' body located in the road at the time of the crash.
The vehicle left the scene heading west. There is no known damage to the vehicle in question.
The crash was categorized as a fatal injury on the report.
At 3:06 a.m., the Evergreen Trooper Post was notified of the fatal crash in Coffee County. Troopers arrived on the scene at 3:38 a.m. where a white male was discovered lying in the roadway with severe head and left shoulder damage, according to the crash report.
The victim's shoes were also reported to be placed in front of the body with a plastic bottle in each shoe.
The body was sent to the Department of Forensic Science for an autopsy to be performed. The results of the autopsy are not available at this time.
The report states that the fatality is being treated as a death investigation.
