With the city council's approval of Ordinance 04-15-14, it is now legal to sell draft or keg beer within the city limits of Enterprise.

During the May 6 council meeting, councilmembers unanimously approved the ordinance, which has been a process more than a year in the making.

In March 2013, a petition with more than 1,600 signatures was presented to the city council requesting an ordinance for draft beer sales.

That request was discussed with local state Rep. Barry Moore and a bill was drafted and presented to the Legislature in the 2014 session.

It was approved and signed by Gov. Robert Bentley on March 20.

The ordinance was introduced to the council April 15 before being advertised and approved at the May 6 meeting.

"One of the issues when we're recruiting restaurants has always been the ordinances in reference to alcoholic beverages," said Enterprise Mayor Kenneth Boswell.

Draft beer sales impact restaurant profit margins due to its lower cost to serve, while also being preferred over bottled beer by the customer.

Boswell said he thinks the passage of the draft beer ordinance will help improve the city's chances of bringing in more restaurants.

"We want to do everything that we can possibly do, not to promote drinking, but ... to promote prosperity from an economic standpoint," Boswell said. "When it comes to restaurants, and that's one of the things that they're requesting, then we need to listen."

I am so happy for Mr. Moore and our wonderful mayor for getting this pushed through! Now as our mayor has said, let the economic boom hit now that we have draft beer for sale in Enterprise. I will bet you in one year we will have nothing new in our town from this except for more trashy bars!!
