The word came out unofficially on the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local Lodge 2003’s Facebook page on the internet Thursday, announcing the layoffs of some 58 employees at Army Fleet Support at Fort Rucker.

A call by The Southeast Sun to the IAM office in Daleville Friday morning went unreturned by Friday afternoon but Army Fleet Support spokesperson Lisa Gee did confirm that some layoffs would be occurring.

In a statement released Friday, Gee said, “L-3 Army Fleet Support is reducing its workforce in order to address recent decreases in our customer’s flying-hour program and projected requirements.”

She said a final number is not yet known but it would be less than 75.

The notification of affected employees began Thursday, she said.

AFS provides rotary-wing maintenance and support for Fort Rucker’s helicopters. Its parent company, L-3 Communications, received a $1.98 billion contract in 2012 for Fort Rucker helicopter maintenance and logistics. The contract consisted of a one-year term and four one-year renewal options.

Workers at Army Fleet Support went on strike during contract negotiations for a week near the end of April.
