When Dale County voters went to the polls March 1, they elected a district judge, a county schools’ superintendent and one Dale County Commissioners. There is a runoff election for a second commission seat.

None of these elected positions had candidates on the Democratic or Independent ballots, which meant the successful Republican candidate were elected to the office..

The purpose of the primary election is for each political party to select their respective nominees for the general election. In the primary, separate ballots are printed for each party and the voter must choose between the ballot with Democrats running against other Democrats or the one in which Republicans run against other Republicans.

In Alabama, the primary election is to select who will represent a party in the general election. In the general election in November, voters may vote for candidates from either political party.

The following is a list of election results with all precincts reporting:

Dale County District 2 Commissioners Steve McKinnon, 790; Donald Grantham, 705; on the Republican Party ballot. There was no Democrat challenger.

Incumbent Dale County District 4 Commissioner Wes Strickland, with 1,242 votes, is facing Frankie Wilson, with 1,080 votes, in a runoff election April 12. Paul Peters garnered 600 votes.

Ben Baker won the election for Dale County Superintendent with 2,,827 votes to Dennis Coe’s 2,649 votes.

Republican candidate Stuart K. Smith defeated John Nicholas “Nicky” Bull 4,430 to 3,689 for the Dale County District Judge seat currently occupied by longtime Dale County District Judge Fred Steagall, who announced his retirement.

Also on the ballot was a proposed amendment to the Constitution of Alabama of 1901 to authorize the legislature to provide a retirement program for district attorneys and circuit clerks of the state who are first elected or appointed on or after Nov. 8, 2016. Dale County voted 5,262 in favor of and 4,277 against the amendment.

To expand on my post...I would have chosen between the Republicans that were on the ticket for these positions.

Because I choose to vote Democrat, I was not offered the opportunity to vote for any commissioner, any judge or the superintendent.
