Daleville softball pitcher and center fielder Ellyce Lascano will continue her career on the diamond at Huntingdon College.

The DHS senior announced her intent to play Hawks softball at an April 12 ceremony at the Billy Adkins Community Center in Daleville, and thanked all of the people who helped her in the game on her way to the college ranks.

“It means a lot to me,” Lascano said of the opportunity to play college softball. “I’ve worked hard, and I thank all of the coaches (who) helped me get where I am today, because I wasn’t easy (to coach) when I was younger. I thank all of my coaches. If It (weren’t) for them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Lascano leads Daleville in batting average with a .519 mark and has 14 hits including a double, a triple and a home run.

“She’s one of our leaders on the team,” DHS softball coach Desmond Lett said. “No matter how many runs we’re down, if we’re in a game, if we’re out of a game, you can always count on her to be out there talking to them.”

In the circle, the senior has 14 strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings pitched.

“(In) the circle, she has played fairly well this year,” Lett said. “There’s been a few games she’s gotten down, but the thing I’ve seen in Ellyce is she’s a competitor. She does not like losing. She gets out there and she gives it her all.”

The Daleville coach said he expects Lascano to do just that at the next level as well.

“She’ll go in and she’ll compete,” Lett said. “She’s always working hard. She’s hungry to compete. I feel next year she could go in and maybe compete for a starting position.”

Proximity played a big role in the Lady Hawk pitcher’s decision to play at Huntingdon.

“It was close to home,” Lascano said. “I’m a homebody. I like being close to home.”

Lascano will be close to home during her college career, and she plans to work for her role on the team.

“I’m going to give it my best. I’m going to give it my all. There is always more room for improvement. It’s a (Division) III school so there’s going to be different things and more things I’m going to have to learn to compete with the others.”

When Lascano’s final year at Daleville is done, Lett said the Lady Hawks will miss one of their leaders.

“We’ll miss her around Daleville next year,” he said. “We sure will.”
