Officers with the Daleville Department of Public Safety intercepted an armed man driving on Daleville Avenue at approximately 11 a.m., May 27, after receiving a 911 call from the man’s wife.

According to Daleville Police Chief Harvey Mathis, at 10:41 a.m., May 27, police were notified that 27-year-old Samuel Douglas Hone III, of Daleville, had left his home with a loaded AK-47 and three additional magazines. Hone’s wife gave police a vehicle description and said her husband had mentioned wanting to harm people.

At approximately 10:53 a.m., Daleville officer Noah Suiter located Hone’s vehicle, a gray 2001 Jeep Cherokee, on Daleville Avenue and pulled him over in the parking lot of the Lingerie Boutique.

Mathis said Hone stepped out of his car and pointed his weapon at Suiter. Suiter fired several shots at Hone after which Hone got back into his vehicle and surrendered. He was immediately disarmed and taken into custody. No one was injured in the incident, Mathis said.

Mathis said Hone was dressed in a military uniform and combat boots and was “ranting and raving about the war" at the time of his arrest. Mathis said Hone’s wife reported during the call that he is a former soldier in the U.S. Army who is suffering from PTSD.

Hone has been charged with attempted murder and is being held at the Dale County Jail.

Daleville investigators have handed the case over to the Alabama Bureau of Investigation for further investigation.
