A Dale County native has been named Dale County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy.
Mason Bynum, a Dale County Sheriff’s Department captain and the department’s public information officer, has served with the Dale County law enforcement agency since 2008.
“I have enjoyed working with Mason in his role as captain and as a deputy,” said Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson. “I look forward to working with him as the chief deputy.”
Bynum was born and raised in Dale County and is a graduate of G.W. Long High School in Skipperville.
Bynum attended Enterprise State Community College on a baseball scholarship before receiving his bachelor’s degree in Criminology from Auburn University.
Bynum began his law enforcement career with the Auburn Police Department in 2005, assigned to the special services division and, after completion of the Northeast Alabama Law Enforcement Academy, was assigned to the patrol division.
Bynum began working at the Dale County Sheriff’s Office in 2008 as a deputy sheriff assigned to the Dale County Jail. He has worked assignments in corrections, patrol and investigations and was assigned to the Wiregrass Violent Crime/Drug Task Force.
Bynum currently handles the day-to-day operations of the sheriff’s office and serves as the commander of the Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team (tactical team) as the department’s public information officer.
Bynum has been married to his wife, Laura-Ashley, since 2013 and they have one daughter named Bentleigh-Layne.
Bynum is the son of Donny and Paula Bynum of Ozark and the grandson of Milton and Nell Doggett of Daleville and the late Larry and Ruby Bynum of Dothan.
Bynum assumes the position of chief deputy that was vacated in January with the retirement of Tim McDonald after 28 years of law enforcement service.
McDonald had been appointed chief deputy under the tenure of longtime Dale County Sheriff Bryant Mixon. After Mixon's retirement, McDonald continued to serve as chief deputy under current Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson.
