With its 2013 spring reading program, March 27, the Daleville Public Library is hoping to offer children something fun to do this spring break while also inspiring them to become eager readers.
The theme for this year’s program is “Everybunny Loves Reading,” a play off of Easter, which will be celebrated this month.
The program will focus on things dealing with Easter like bunnies, rabbits, eggs and ducks.
The event will also feature a variety of activities to include guest speakers, arts and crafts and, of course, reading.
The spring reading program is open to all children ages 3-11 years old, and times will be split up into age groups.
Three to six year olds will meet from 10 to 11 a.m. and 7- 11 year olds will meet from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Registration is currently taking place at the library and there is no admission to participate.
Residents are encouraged to register before March 27 so the library staff has enough time to prepare for snacks and crafts.
Library assistant Rachel Horne, Windham Elementary School secretary Georgia Nichols and her husband Kim Nichols will be reading to the children.
“We’ll have a story time,” Kathryn Brown, director of the Daleville Public Library, said. “They’ll have a snack and then we’ll have crafts.”
All of the books read can be checked out in the library.
For the arts and crafts portion students will decorate the library activity room, create picture frames with Easter designs, make sticker Easter egg hunt scenes and wear temporary Easter tattoos.
Children who participate in the event will also receive a goody bag.
Brown said she hopes the event has a great turnout.
“We want kids to love the library,” she said. “We want it to be place where they want to come and check out books.”
Brown said since the library has received new funding, the library now has six new children’s computers and several DVDs available.
“We got a grant for six new children computers with educational and recreational games,” she said. “We want them to just feel welcome in the library and be lifelong learners. Let (the library) be an enjoyable experience for them.”
Brown said the library staff loves to do reading programs for kids and asks residents to look out for a summer reading program coming up.
“If people are not going on vacation, the kids that are still around Daleville will have a place to go,” she said.
