“There is no winning in practice but without it, there is no winning,” said JROTC Cpl. Lamar Raybon, following the Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corp Championships in Anniston Feb. 18-20.
The award-winning Daleville High School JROTC has had a successful 2015-2016 competition season thus far and is looking forward to even more, including nationals.
Senior Army Instructor retired Lt. Col. Chris Miller said, “It was a tough competition against many good shooters from 10 Southeastern states. This competition is considered the Army JROTC Regional Championship and qualifier for the Inter-Service JROTC National Championship.
“For teams to qualify for this match, they had to be in the top 24 teams in their region after shooting a postal match in their home range. Over 7,000 cadets compete in the first round each year, vying for a spot in their branch's service championship.”
The service championship match is held every year in Anniston while the Northeastern teams compete in Camp Perry, OH while Western teams utilize a mobile range provided by the Civilian Marksmanship Program.
“Each branch of service holds similar competitions over two weekends in February, and the top seven teams from each service championship are then invited to either Camp Perry or Anniston on alternating years for the Inter-service JROTC Nationals,” explained Miller. “Our team members started the match mid-February with a close second place position on day one and held that position until completion of the event. Their consistency and efforts also secured the team a spot in the Inter-service JROTC National Championship in mid-March.
Raybon added that he really enjoyed the match and is looking forward to the National Championship match as well. “My experience there was great. I got to see a lot of different teams out there and learn something from (those) teams. I went to do my best and my team did great, too.”
