When requests for town help in cleaning New Brockton's streets were denied, council members Wednesday morning decided to take matters into their own hands.
"We asked him (Mayor Lenwood Herron) to have the Street Department pick up this mess, but he refused," said councilman Jack Young. "We decided we would just get out here and clean it ourselves."
Councilwoman Kathy Holley, New Brockton Water and Sewer Board member Sonny Eads and New Brockton Wine and Spirits owner Will Smith joined Young Wednesday in cleaning garbage and debris piles along McKinnon Street.
Debris including piles of limbs, leaves and garbage were piled along the right of ways in front of two residences on McKinnon Street.
Though the residences from which the debris came currently do not have garbage or water accounts with the town, Young said he feels it is the town's responsibility to keep the roadway clean.
"It is also about taking pride in our town," Holley said.
While cleanup efforts were underway Wednesday, several residents stopped officials to thank them for their efforts.
"We are just glad to get this taken care of," Holley said.
The debris and garbage piles have reportedly been along the roadways for more than four months.
