Severe weather has battered the Wiregrass area throughout the past week, which caused local flooding, downed trees and spawned tornados.

One tornado was confirmed in Coffee County. The storm began in Geneva County and traveled through the southeastern portion of the county, near the Cool Springs community, before continuing into Dale County near Level Plains.

No structural damage was reported in Coffee County or in Level Plains. Geneva County officials received reports of damage to at least one chicken house and a roof being ripped off a barn near the town of Chancellor.

Another possible tornado that was indicated by the National Weather Service also swept through Coffee County and Dale County in a similar track after being reported in Geneva County, however, emergency management officials did not receive any reports of damage. Another possible tornado or funnel cloud was spotted near the intersection of Highway 134 and Highway 87.

Since Friday, the area has received anywhere from at least two-to-five inches of rain.

Local rainfall totals were 3.1 inches in New Brockton, 3.4 inches in Elba, 4.4 inches in Geneva and 4.6 in Ozark.

A portion of Highway 84 West, from Highway 51 to Salem Road, was closed June 10 after rainwater submerged a low-lying part of the road. It was re-opened several hours later after the rain subsided. No other road closures occurred within the county and no other major flooding was reported.

According to Emergency Management Agency Director Larry Walker, his office received three reports of downed trees, but no reports of power outages.

A weather siren located at the YMCA on Highway 27 North malfunctioned after the storms passed, Walker said, and required the assistant of the Enterprise Fire Department’s ladder truck to stop stop the siren from sounding.
