An 8-year-old Zion Chapel student was seriously injured during an all-terrain vehicle accident on Thanksgiving Day.

Third-grader Halee Deal was a passenger on the ATV while riding a trail on private property on County Road 208 when the accident occurred.

According to reports, Halee, daughter of Kayla and Derrick Deal, was transported by helicopter to the Birmingham Children's Hospital where she underwent surgery for a number of injuries including a lacerated liver, collapsed lung, broken ribs and fractured pelvis.

The Coffee County Sheriff's Department, Elba Police Department and Coffee County EMS responded to the accident.

Zion Chapel principal Bob Hartwell said he has been in communication with Halee's mother who said her condition is improving.

A blood drive has been organized on Halee's behalf at Zion Chapel School on Dec. 9 from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the multi-purpose room. Students and teachers are also being asked to wear green on Dec. 1 in honor of Halee. Green ribbons are being sold for $2 in honor of Halee with proceeds being sent to Halee's parents. If interested in purchasing a ribbon, contact Rachel Wilson at 464-1746 or at [email protected].

"Praying for Halee" T-shirts are also being sold for $10 to benefit the Deal family. To purchase a T-shirt, contact Pam Berry at 897-2692.

Wilson also said if anyone would like to donate money, change, gifts or cards, they can also contact her and she will deliver them to the Deal family.

Soda can tabs are also being collected at Jones Medical Supply in Troy, the ZC Store in Jack, Kids Unlimited in Elba, Milky Moo's and Dog Days in Enterprise for submission to the Ronald McDonald House for Halee's parents. Every gallon of tabs will pay for one night for Halee's parents at the Ronald McDonald House.
