The governor has appointed a new commissioner for Coffee County.

Donnis (Mickey) Lee will serve as the new District 6 commissioner to fill the remainder of former Commissioner Kevin Mitchell's term, which ends November 2016.

Mitchell resigned as the District 6 commissioner on May 12.

Lee said his new commissioner position is his first in local government.

"This is my first opportunity in government," Lee said. "It's a learning position."

Lee previously held management positions at a number of hotels and was the deputy sheriff with the West Palm Beach Police Department in Florida.

"I had been in the hotel business for about 19 years," Lee said. "Then I moved to work with the police in West Palm Beach. I worked there for about 11 years. That's when I retired. "

He also has experience teaching at Enterprise State College and working with Enterprise High School as a business/education coordinator.

Lee said that he does not have any projects for the district at the moment. He wanted to get to know the other commissioners and their projects first.

"I have to get familiar with Dean Smith, the chair, and the other commissioner's projects," Lee said.

Lee will be sworn in as the new District 6 commissioner on Monday at the Coffee County Commission office in New Brockton.

The next commission meeting will be on June 22 at 9 a.m. in the commission office.

Nothing against Mr. Lee and I am sure he is a good man, but really, how did the Governor's office come up with this selection? He has no experience in politics, he has spent most of his life out this state and county. Coffee County is in bad shape with all the leadership and the whole truth will come out one day about everything that goes on in the county leadership.
