The Enterprise Fire Department responded to reports of smoke at Sessions Company around 11:30 p.m., July 20.

According to Enterprise Fire Chief Byron Herring, Sessions' employees alerted the department after smoke began filling the building shortly after 11 p.m.

"Best I could tell there were about dozen people working at that time," he said, adding no injuries were related to the call.

Herring said a silo storing peanut husks began smoldering and produced smoke that was carried by an air-intake into the shelling building at Sessions.

“There was not any fire damage to the sheller building,” Herring said. “We’re still evaluating to see if there was any smoke damage inside.”

Herring said members of the Enterprise Fire Department took shifts going inside of the silo and cleaning the husks out with high-power hoses.

“It looks like we’re going to have to clean the whole thing out,” Herring said referring to the silo. “We all know what peanut husks can do.”

Herring said at this time the department is unsure what caused the fire but he did say electric motors could have easily sparked the flammable husks.

“It could have been worse,” Herring said. “They should be able to go right back into operation, once we make sure it’s out.”

Herring said the first shift of fire fighters worked from 11:30 p.m. until about 7 a.m. on Saturday morning and then a second shift reported to Sessions for work.

Battling a fire is enough, but to do so wearing about 55 pounds of gear, climbing up and down a ladder and inside the silo takes a toll on the firefighters, Herring said.

Any additional details on the fire will be published on www.southeastsun.com as they are made available. Also look for the story in Wednesday's edition of The Sun.
