Josh McCray named to SI All-American Watch List

Enterprise senior athlete Josh McCray continues to get national attention as he was recently named to the Sports Illustrated High School All-American Watch List.

McCray currently holds scholarship offers from a number of Power 5 colleges, including Arkansas, Kentucky, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Tennessee. Troy was also one of the first FBS schools to extend an offer to the 6-foot-2-inch athlete.

SI described McCray as “a big back who has a bit of an old school feel to his run style. His size and strength make him a candidate to work as a 3-down runner, as he can factor in the screen game. McCray also has solid ball skills from his experience as a receiver.”

SI lists McCray as an All-American candidate at running back but Enterprise coach Rick Darlington has described McCray as Enterprise’s version of a “slash,” which is a term originally coined to describe former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart for his versatility.

As a freshman, McCray started two games at running back before a shoulder injury sidelined him. As a sophomore, McCray moved to wide receiver where he primarily played in the slot. McCray caught 45 passes for 558 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore, but also scored 12 rushing touchdowns from the “Wildcat” position.

As a junior, McCray moved back primarily to running back under Darlington but continued to play receiver and also moved to defense- as a starting safety – for the first time. He finished the year with 604 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground along with 103 yards and another touchdown receiving. On defense, McCray totaled 39 tackles, six pass breakups, two tackles-for-loss and a team-leading four interceptions with another touchdown.

In 2018, McCray earned Alabama Sports Writers Association second-team all-state honors as an athlete and was named to The Sun’s Elite 11 and Offensive Player of the Year. In 2019, McCray again made the Elite 11 team and earned All-Around Player of the Year.

This season, McCray will play all over the field on offense, lining up at wing back, tailback, fullback and wide receiver, giving the Wildcat offense a number of different options.

McCray is also a multi-sport athlete, as well, as a starter on the basketball team and top performer on the track and field team.
