Enterprise falls in OT slugfest with Geneva County

The Enterprise Wildcats couldn’t hold off the fired up Geneva County Bulldogs on Dec. 10 losing 76-67 in overtime.

Enterprise held a 58-55 lead as time was running out in the fourth quarter before Geneva County’s J’Quan Broxson drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

The Bulldogs owned the fourth quarter and outscored Enterprise 18-9 in the final period to secure the 76-67 win.

Things started out rough for Enterprise as Geneva County jumped out to a 19-6 lead in the first quarter before the Wildcats rallied to dominate the Bulldogs in the second quarter. Enterprise outscored Geneva County 21-7 in the period to take a 27-26 lead into halftime.

The two sides slugged it out in the third quarter with both teams scoring 13 points and Enterprise holding on to a narrow 40-39 lead going into the final period. Geneva County outscored Enterprise 19-18 in the fourth quarter.

Enterprise shot 44 percent from the field in the loss, while Geneva County shot 49 percent. Geneva County really held the advantage beyond the arc, knocking down 6-of-12 three-point attempts. Enterprise made just six-of-26 three-point attempts. Enterprise was also outrebounded 36-32 and turned the ball over 24 times. Geneva County turned the ball over 26 times, however.

The biggest difference in the game, though, came at the free thrown line. Enterprise knocked down just 5-of-16 free throw attempts. Meanwhile, Geneva County converted a staggering 28-of-44 free throws. During the loss, two Wildcats fouled out and three others had four fouls.

Junior Quentin Hayes led Enterprise with 19 points, three rebounds, four assists and two steals, while senior Jalen Cunningham scored 13 points and dished five assists with three steals.

Senior Josh McCray scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds before fouling out, while junior Elijah Terry scored eight points, grabbed six rebounds, dished four assists and earned four steals before fouling out. Senior Jared Smith also scored nine points in the loss.

Geneva County was led by Emmanuel Henderson’s 30 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Boxson added 23 points and seven rebounds.

Enterprise also struggled to a 70-53 loss on the road at Eufaula on Dec. 8. Enterprise led Eufaula 18-12 in the first quarter but Eufaula took a 35-34 lead into halftime.

The big difference came when Eufaula outscored Enterprise 21-5 in the third quarter to take a 56-39 lead into the fourth quarter. Enterprise and Eufaula both scored 14 points in the fourth quarter and the Tigers held on to the 70-53 win.

McCray led Enterprise against Eufaula with 14 points, four rebounds and two assists. Freshman Keion Dunlap scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds with three steals. Terry scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Enterprise’s planned game with R.E. Lee on Dec. 14 was cancelled and the Wildcats will be back in action in a tournament in Florala on Dec. 17.
