The New Brockton Gamecocks and Lady Gamecocks both saw their 2020 seasons come to a close last week in the Class 2A, Area 4 Tournament.

The Gamecocks (3-20) lost 48-37 to the Zion Chapel Rebels on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

New Brockton shot 26.7 percent from the field and was outrebounded 43-27 by the Rebels. The Gamecocks were able to force 13 turnovers, however, and scored 22 points in the paint.

Zion Chapel jumped ahead 11-8 in the first quarter and then stretched the lead out to 30-19 at halftime, but the Gamecocks fought back and cut the lead to 36-30 heading into the final period.

Zion Chapel won the fourth quarter 12-7 to take away the 48-37 win.

New Brockton was led in the loss by senior Tariq Walker with 16 points and four rebounds, while junior Dillon Kelty added 13 points and nine rebounds.

Zion Chapel was led by Connor Kelley with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Rebels went on to win the area championship, which was the first area title in more than 20 years for the school before falling to Daleville on Feb. 11 in sub-regional action.

The Lady Gamecocks (0-22) also saw their season come to an end with a 78-23 loss to Samson in the area tournament.

New Brockton senior Paula McKenna led the way for New Brockton with nine points, while Samson’s Brantley Edberg led all scorers with 20 points.
