Water Board approves chamber contract

The Daleville Water and Sewer Board approved a contract with the Daleville Chamber of Commerce at its meeting on Feb. 18.

As part of the one-year contract, the board agreed to make a one-time lump sum donation in the amount of $15,000 to the Chamber of Commerce to last the chamber through the calendar year.

The contract also states that the COC will be in charge of ensuring the Miss and Little Miss Daleville Pageants are held each year and that the Daleville Queens will be in the National Miss Peanut Festival Parade.

However, the board took out the requirement for the chamber to “ensure” representatives of the city participate in the National Miss Peanut Festival Pageant due to it being out of the chamber’s control.

“They can’t ensure there will be a representative at Peanut unless there are enough contestants to qualify,” Water Board and City Councilmember Jo Reese said. “That’s a burden that they cannot necessarily meet, even with best effort. You have to have so many girls in each category for the winners to be eligible, that’s why the last two years we haven’t been able to go to Peanut.”

The rest of the board agreed with Reese.

Other duties assigned to the chamber by the contact include holding the city’s annual Christmas parade, organizing the city’s annual Fort Rucker Appreciation Week, provide welcome packets to all new residents, give the Water Board updates on chamber activities at its monthly meeting and provide updates to the Daleville City Council at least once a month regarding chamber activities.

A motion to approve the contract with the changes made at the meeting was made by Water Board member Scott Moore, who also serves on the city council, and seconded by Water Board Member Josh Robertson, who also serves as the high school’s principal.

The contract was unanimously approved.

In other news, the chamber voted to unanimously approve tabling a municipal water pollution prevention resolution until the board received a MWPP annual report.

“We’ve got to look at that before we start on this,” Board Chairman Charles Tongret said.

The rest of the board agreed.

The motion to table the resolution was passed unanimously.

The next Daleville Water and Sewer Board meeting will be March 17 at 4:30 p.m. in the council chambers at Daleville City Hall. The meeting is open to the public.
