Council approves job fair request

The Daleville City Council approved Wendy’s request at its last meeting on Feb. 18 to hold a job fair at the Daleville Cultural and Convention Center.

The job fair will take place on Tuesday, March 2, from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and the use of the center will be at no cost.

“This will be a huge event in preparing to open our new Wendy’s,” Mayor Jayme Stayton said. “I know, definitely, for our store here it will be quite a bit of jobs.”

Stayton said he knew that the new store was looking to fill multiple crews.

“We’re always excited about job fairs,” Councilmember Katheryne Horace said.

In other business, several councilmembers thanked the mayor and the city for allowing them to attend the Alabama League of Municipalities’ 2020 Legislative Advocacy Day.

“It was very interesting and informative,” Horace said. “We had members from the (State) Senate come and present to us and we also had members from the (State) House of Representatives present to us during that time. They basically tried to cover the hot topics that they were addressing.”

Horace gave special recognition to Daleville High School alumnus William Filmore, who now serves as the director of legislative affairs.

“He was most impressive,” Horace said. “He walked us up to the House and we sat there and discussed some of the actions the House was taking and why that is. It was very encouraging to see a Daleville High School student being so impressive and working with the governor.”

Councilmember Jo Reese also expressed her thanks for the opportunity to attend and said that the event provided a learning experience.

“I feel like I learned a lot that I can use for the remainder of this term and if reelected in the next term to help our own particular city—even though we’re not out in the sticks—we can still use a lot of what we learned.,” Reese said. “There was so much they covered, you just needed to be there.”

Councilmember Bobby Hardrick also chimed in on the subject.

“I’d like to thank the city for sending me to the Advocacy Day in Montgomery,” Hardrick said.

He then provided an update saying that he was able to give a former City of Daleville employee who is now in flight school her first flight evaluation.

The next Daleville City Council meeting will be March 3 at 5:30 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall. A work session on March 2 at 5 p.m. in the conference room at City Hall and will precede the meeting. Both meetings are open to the public.
