The Daleville City Council had a special-called work session on Feb. 24 to discuss the pay for the next administration.
City Clerk Angela Filmore said the work session was called because the last day to make any changes, if the council so desired, was Feb. 25.
She said the last pay increase for the council and mayor was passed in 2004, which set the pay for the mayor at $1,000 per month and council members at $400 per month.
Councilmember Alan Souders said he felt that the council should not approve a pay increase for themselves since they’ve asked the departments to cut back to help deal with the deficit in the budget.
“I was just thinking that if we’re talking about cutting back then this time we don’t need to do this (increase the pay),” Souders said. “That’s my thoughts. Maybe in four years it can be looked at again.”
Councilmembers Jo Reese, Scott Moore, Bobby Hardrick, and Katheryne Horace as well as Mayor Jayme Stayton agreed with Souders’ sentiment.
“If 3 percent was all we could afford for our employees, it just doesn’t feel right (raising the next administration’s pay),” Stayton said.
With the census of everyone at the work session being not to increase the pay for the next administration, Filmore said that no action was needed.
“This (2004 ordinance setting the council and mayor’s pay) stays in effect,” Filmore said. “We do not need a new ordinance if this one stays in effect.”
Since no action was needed to keep the next administration’s pay the same, the special-called meeting set for Feb. 25 was cancelled.
The next Daleville City Council meeting will be March 17 at 5:30 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall. A work session will precede the meeting on March 16 at 5 p.m. in the conference room at City Hall. Both these meetings are open to the public.
