LP council approves VFD grant application

The Level Plains City Council, at its regular meeting on Feb. 18, approved the Level Plains Volunteer Fire Department’s request to apply for two FEMA grants.

LPVFD Chief Jamie Gatlin addressed the council regarding the request.

“I’d like to apply for a new fire truck and then a separate grant for new turnout gear,” Gatlin said. “Should we get both of those, the total would be $16,600 for our share and we don’t have to have that immediately. The money shouldn’t be an issue even though we just had to buy the motor for the truck.”

The request was approved.

In other business, the council discussed how to proceed in removing the trailer on the recently purchased property on Z Street that is adjacent to the city’s community building property.

“The March 3 election will be okay but when the November election gets here, we’ve got to have parking,” Mayor Bruce Grantham said.

After receiving quotes from businesses, the council decided that it was best to let the city handle the tearing down of the trailer itself.

A motion was made and passed that approved $1,500 for equipment and fees so the city can accomplish the task.

Grantham requested permission to sell the city’s 2003 Crown Vic on GovDeals with a lower reserve to see if it will sell.

The council approved the request.

Grantham also appointed councilmembers Ronnie Thompson and Leeanne Mohler to the Employee Pay Increase Committee.

He said he wants to eventually push back the yearly review until after the city gets its municipal insurance rate for the year so that can be accounted for in the review.

The next Level Plains City Council meeting will be March 3 at 6 p.m. at Level Plains City Hall. The meeting is open to the public.
