Both the Troy Trojans and Lady Trojans began Sun Belt play as the New Year got underway both splitting a pair of games with Appalachian State.

The Trojans (6-5, 1-1) started off conference play with a 69-56 win over Appalachian State on Jan. 1 before being utterly dominated by the Mountaineers 90-59 on Jan. 2. Both games were played at Appalachian State.

Troy took a 33-30 lead into halftime of the first matchup before pulling away in the second half after outscoring the Mountaineers 36-26 in the second half.

Both Nick Stampley and Khalyl Waters led Troy with 17 points each for the Trojans. Stampley also grabbed seven rebounds.

James Lewis Jr. led Appalachian State with 16 points.

Troy got off to a slow start in the second game with Appalachian State jumping out to a 50-26 lead at halftime. The Trojans played better in the second half but were still outscored by the Mountaineers 40-33 in the second half.

Stampley had a career-high 19 points in the loss along with six rebounds, while Kam Woods added 14 points and two assists. Justin Forrest led Appalachian State with 21 points.

The Lady Trojans (5-4, 1-1) opened up with a 78-66 loss against Appalachian State on Jan. 1 before bouncing back to pick up an 85-65 win over the Lady Mountaineers on Jan. 2. Both games were played at Trojan Arena.

Troy grabbed a 13-11 lead heading into the second quarter but were then outscored 23-21 in the second quarter allowing the Lady Mountaineers to tie the score 34-34 at halftime.

Appalachian State outscored Troy 15-13 in the third quarter and then pulled away in the fourth quarter by outscoring Troy 29-19 in the period.

Alexus Dye led Troy with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Janiah Sandifer scored 11 points and six steals. Both Tiyah Johnson and Jhileiya Dunlap scored 10 points each. Dunlap also grabbed six rebounds.

Things changed in the second game as Troy dominated Appalachian State from the beginning until the end outscoring Appalachian State in all but one period. In the win, three Lady Trojans earned double-doubles.

Tyasia Moore set career highs as she earned a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds, while Felmas Koranga also scored a career-high double-double 18 points and 14 rebounds. Sandifer chipped in with 19 points and Dye scored 13 points with 11 rebounds.

The Trojans are back at home on Jan. 8 and Jan. 9 against Georgia State, while the Lady Trojans travel to Georgia State on Jan. 8 and Jan. 9.
