The New Brockton Gamecocks (0-1) started off the 2020-2021 season on the road against county rival Kinston Bulldogs (1-0) on Friday, Nov. 13, and lost 74-53.
The Bulldogs held on to a slim 12-10 lead after the first quarter of play but also outscored New Brockton 17-10 in the second quarter to carry a 29-20 lead into the half.
Kinston then dominated the third quarter, outscoring New Brockton 23-11, to take a 52-31 lead into the final period. New Brockton match Kinston in the fourth quarter, 22-22, but it wasn’t enough as Kinston held on for the 74-53 lead.
Senior Damarion Holt led the Gamecocks with 17 points in the loss. Holt was a starting guard for Enterprise last season. Sophomore Matthew Smith chipped in with 14 points, while senior Brandon Johnson and eighth grader Baylon Foster scored eight points each.
Reese Hall led the Bulldogs with 20 points, while Cale Sumblin scored 19 points and Trip Hawthorne contributed 14 points.
The JV Gamecocks also fell to Kinston 40-12. Bryant Crumpler led New Brockton with five points, while Hunter White added four points. Michael Thompson led Kinston with 15 points.
The Gamecocks will play Ariton on the road on Nov. 19.
