The New Brockton Gamecocks (2-2) dropped a game to Bibb County 16-1 on Saturday, Feb. 29 but rebounded to knock off county foe Elba 9-4 on Monday, March 2.
Bibb County earned 10 hits but 14 runs were earned off errors or walks.
The Gamecocks managed just four hits on the day with Kaden Cupp, Drew Cashin, Ethan Stinson and Garrett Zorn each earning one hit. Cupp also scored New Brockton’s lone run.
Stinson, Clay Cotney and CJ Wilkerson all made appearances on the mound and each struck out one batter.
New Brockton followed up with a home matchup against Class 1A’s Elba Tigers on March 2.
The Gamecocks fell behind 2-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning but an Elba error led to Zorn scoring to cut the lead to 2-1. Brik Schofield then scored on another error to tie the game 2-2.
In the bottom of the third inning, Ethan Stinson stole home base to give New Brockton it’s first lead of the game 3-2 and then Schofield belted a line drive double into center field sending Russell Weeks home to give the Gamecocks a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Gamecock lead continued to swell.
Weeks hit a ground ball single that drove Cotney home and an error led to Cashin scoring a run to extend the lead out to 8-2 for New Brockton.
Stinson then stole home on a wild pitch and Kade Brunson drove Weeks home with a ground ball single as New Brockton’s lead stretched to 9-2.
Elba managed two runs in the top of the fifth inning but ace pitching from CJ Wilkerson mowed down the Tigers in the sixth and seventh inning to secure the 9-4 Gamecock win.
Wilkerson pitched two and 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and just three hits and no runs allowed. Cupp pitched four innings and earned five strikeouts with four runs on just one hit allowed. Errors from the Gamecock infield led to two of those runs.
Zorn led New Brockton at the plate, going 2-of-4 with an RBI and two runs, while Schofield went 2-of-3 with an RBI and a run. Cotney, Cashin, Stinson and Weeks all earned one hit. The Gamecocks were also walked seven times.
The JV Gamecocks picked up a 10-9 win at home against Carroll on Feb. 28 with Hunter White earning the win on the mound, pitching three innings.
The JV Gamecocks also picked up a 16-0 win over Elba on March 2 with AT Wilkerson picking up the win on the mound.
