Funeral services for Richard Joseph Unekis, 83, of Enterprise were to be at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, 2009, at the chapel of Searcy Funeral Home and Crematory with the Rev. Johnny Bryant officiating.

Burial was to follow in Meadowlawn Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Unekis passed away Thursday, Sept. 17, at Medical Center Enterprise. Mr. Unekis was a member of Christ Community Church of God and the Primetimers Group in that church. A graduate of the University of Illinois, Unekis earned his doctorate of Law degree, (J.D.) from Loyola University in New Orleans, La. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of Springvale Terrace Nursing Home in Silver Spring, Md. He was the author of the book, "The Chase," which was made into a movie by 20th Century Fox. His book earned the Edgar Allen Poe Raven Award for best first of the genre for the year. The book was also published in seven countries under different titles.

He was preceded in death by a grandchild.

Survivors include his wife, Irma Elaine Unekis of Enterprise; daughter, Ann Campbell of Westminster, Md.; three sons, John Unekis (Valerie) of Fairfax, Va., James Unekis (Annemarie) of Baltimore, Md., and Michael Unekis (Christy) of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; one sister, Mary McConnell of Covington, Ind.; and a brother, Joseph Unekis of Manhattan, Kan.
