Clifton Marsh

Mississippi officials have confirmed a local man was shot and killed on his 31st birthday by a Waveland, Miss. police officer Saturday morning.

Clifton Lane Marsh, of Brundidge, died shortly after the altercation at Hancock Medical Center.

Agent Warren Strain of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said at about 3:30 a.m. Waveland police received a call about a suspicious vehicle in the area of a Travel Express Inn located on U.S. Highway 90.

“When police got there a foot chase ensued, a weapon was displayed by the suspect and shots were fired,” Strain said, by phone Saturday afternoon, before Marsh’s name had been released pending notification of next of kin.

Since a police officer was involved, Mississippi Bureau of Investigations was called in to investigate the shooting.

According to Coffee County court records, a warrant was issued March 13 for Marsh after he failed to meet conditions of a bond in connection with a Nov. 1, 2011 arrest on a charge of manufacturing of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. At the time of Marsh’s arrest his address was listed as Cinema Drive, Enterprise.

Marsh was released from jail on Dec. 2, 2011, but was re-arrested Jan. 22 for failure to appear. District Judge Paul Sherling allowed Marsh to post bond on Jan. 27 for the re-arrest under the condition Marsh wear a GPS ankle monitor.

A warrant was issued after court officials discovered Marsh allowed the batteries to go dead and failed to pay fees associated with the ankle monitor.

Marsh's bond had been secured by David Tyler, of Ace Bonding Company in Enterprise. Tyler said Marsh had cut off the ankle monitor so he and friend went to Marsh's grandmother's house in Brundidge to pick Marsh up.

"He (Marsh) ran in the house grabbed the keys to his grandmother's car, jumped in and about ran me and friend over," Tyler said, adding Ace will no longer be liable for Marsh's bond.

Marsh had been a fugitive of justice since that time.
