With five votes, Kevin Killingsworth was named the new Coffee County superintendent. He was one of five finalists in the running for superintendent.
The vote was held Thursday, May 17, during a special meeting of the Coffee County Board of Education.
Board member Larry Eddins made the motion to employ Killingsworth as the superintendent.
"I move that the board hire Kevin Killingsworth to serve as the superintendent of education for the Coffee County Board of Education, subject to negotiations and board approval of an employment contract setting out the terms and provisions of the employment," Eddins said.
Board member Eric Payne seconded the motion.
Board members Payne, Eddins, Rubin McKinnon, Galen McWaters and Mike Bailey voted for hiring Killingsworth.
There was no call to vote against the motion or abstain from voting.
After the meeting, board member Wendy Massey reached out the The Southeast Sun to clarify that she did not vote for Killingsworth because she planned to support a nomination for finalist Kelly Cobb.
Killingsworth is expected to serve as the superintendent at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year, pending board approval of an employment contract. He will take over the position from current superintendent Terry Weeks, who will be retiring July 1.
Killingsworth has served as the Coffee County School System's special programs coordinator since 2016.
He has previously served as principal of Zion Chapel School and New Brockton High School. He served as the assistant principal of Zion Chapel School.
He has served as an assistant principal, safety director, athletic director, physical education teacher, offensive coordinator and strength coach with Elba City Schools.
He has also served as a physical education teacher, head football coach and athletic director at Enterprise Junior High School and physical education teacher and head football coach at Dauphin Junior High School.
He received his bachelor of science in physical education and his master of science in physical education from Troy State University. He received his master's administrative supervisor certificate from Alabama State University.
The next school board meeting will be held on Thursday, June 7, at 5: 30 p.m. at the central office in Elba.
