On Tuesday, Feb. 14, around 350-400 seniors from 14 senior centers around the Wiregrass took part in the Fort Rucker Spouses' Club's Sweetheart Bingo Tournament.
Sweetheart Bingo Chair Jodi Coyle said this event takes about five months to plan, but it is the biggest event where the group is able to completely serve others.
"Most of our efforts are spent toward fundraising to give back to the community," Coyle said. "This is the one event that we do that we completely give. It's our biggest philanthropic event, and it's one event that the local communities come to count on. We almost get more joy out of it than they do."
The club contacts the Southern Alabama Regional Council on Aging (SARCOA) before inviting the various senior centers to the event.
The centers represented during the event were the Daleville, Damascus, Elba, Enterprise, Ino, Kinston, Midland City, Mt. Pleasant, New Brockton, New Hope, Newton, Ozark, Pine Level and Zion Chapel Senior Center.
Coyle said it was important for military organizations like the Fort Rucker Spouses' Club to give back to the local community.
"I think for any military installation, it's awesome to see how the local community supports the military itself," Coyle said. "So, it's awesome, as a military organization, to be able to give back to the local communities."
