Hundreds of cars travel up and down Donnell Boulevard every day in Daleville. Soon those travelers will have a much smoother ride to and from their destination.

At the Oct. 6 meeting, the Daleville City Council approved a bid from Wiregrass Construction Company to repave the 1.1-mile stretch of road that services Daleville Public Library, the rear entry of Daleville High School and several businesses.

The winning bid totaled $304,471.00, and includes the road surface and the sidewalks. Civil Southeast’s Jeremy McMath will serve as project manager for the repave, and said the road needs attention, based on studies he and others have conducted.

“It is time for a new surface, there is no doubt about that,” McMath said. “We went out and took core samples of the current surface, and determined what needed to be done. Asphalt has a life to it, and usually a surface will last between eight and 15 years depending on how much liquid was used to make it.”

The road serves as an alternate route through Daleville for commuters to and from Ft. Rucker. Donnell Boulevard stretches just over one mile, but McMath said it’s the width of the road that is the most puzzling.

“The road is exceptionally wide,” McMath said. “I don’t really know why it is that wide, but it is. That will help with the flow of traffic when the project begins. We shouldn’t have to close the road. There may be some times that it is one lane, but because the road is wide, it should remain open.”

McMath said he, members of Wiregrass Construction Company and officials from Daleville City Schools will sit down and hash out traffic issues at a pre-planning meeting later this month. The project is expected to begin the first week of November.

The paving project is possible thanks in large part to a substantial amount of money provided by the Alabama Department of Transportation. ALDOT will provide $150,000 to the project, which covers nearly half of the total price of the repave.

Pretty ridiculous considering the main four-lane has patched potholes that almost bust your tires when it rains. Who's the genius that decided to pave the back streets? Bet it has "something" to do with the Baptist Church??? That is why this road is being paved
