One class at Windham Elementary School decided to celebrate Earth Day, April 22, in a green way.
Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 after being founded by former U.S. Senator Gaylor Nelson from Wisconsin. This day, April 22, is set aside to educate people about the importance of the Earth and taking care of the planet.
To celebrate Earth Day, Adriene White’s kindergarten class planted two Red Flowering Crabapple trees near the gym next to WES. The trees are known for their colorful, springtime blooms, according to Better Homes & Garden’s website.
According to White, the idea to plant a tree for Earth Day came from questions her students asked about the environment.
“We are planting the trees because I’m talking to my students about why we recycle and what the trees and plants do for us,” she said. “They asked me why they see people cutting down trees, so I decided that we do need more trees.”
When Dylan Westover, one of White’s students, was asked about the class planting a tree, he spoke about their importance for people.
“We plant trees because plants and trees make oxygen for us,” he said, also commenting on the importance of recycling. “We recycle so that the trees will grow and trash will not be dumped in the ocean.”
Each student helped to plant the tree, assisting White in covering the plant with dirt. White said the planted trees, when they bloom, will be “beautiful.”
