“Humbled and appreciative of the opportunity,” is how Sonya Wheeler Rich described her thoughts minutes after being named the new District 1 Councilman for the city of Enterprise at a council meeting Tuesday, June 6.

With this appointment, Rich becomes the second woman in the history of Enterprise to hold a city council seat.

Rich was one of seven District 1 citizens who applied for the seat left open after longtime councilman William “Bill” Cooper was sworn in as mayor after former mayor Kenneth Boswell was appointed to serve as Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs Executive Director.

Eight people, to include one person ineligible for the seat due to residency requirements, submitted applications for the post by the May 30 deadline. Qualified applicants, in addition to Rich, were Eddie Diggs, LaPorcha Diggs, Randolph “Randy” Hart Jr., Jacob L. Speigner, Jerrold Whitehurst and Karen Woods.

When Enterprise City Council President Eugene Goolsby called for nominations to fill the seat, Councilman Perry Vickers nominated Rich and Councilman Al Miller nominated Whitehurst.

Councilmen Turner Townsend and Goolsby joined Vickers in voting for Rich. Miller cast the single vote for Whitehurst.

Rich will be officially sworn in to office at the next Enterprise City Council meeting Tuesday, June 20, at 6 p.m. in the council chambers in city hall.
