The New Brockton Gamecocks and Lady Gamecocks finished the 2020 regular season with a pair of losses on the road against G.W. Long and Elba last week.

First up, the Gamecocks fell to Long 74-63 on Jan. 30 in Skipperville.

The Gamecocks (3-19) shot a collective 25-of-59 from the field in the loss and went 8-of-16 from the free throw line, and were outrebounded 40-37 by Long.

A bright spot for the Gamecocks was junior Sean Lindley, who scored a career-high 16 points shooting 8-of-9 from the field. Lindley also grabbed three rebounds and dished one assist.

Senior Tariq Walker led New Brockton with 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists, as well. Senior Dalton Shehee added nine points and seven rebounds, while junior Dillon Kelty chipped in with eight points, six rebounds, three steals and four assists.

Against Long, the Lady Gamecocks fell 74-12 in a frustrating road loss.

New Brockton fell behind 17-2 in the first quarter and went scoreless in the second quarter to trail 38-2 at halftime. The Lady Gamecocks played better in the second half but were still outscored 36-10.

New Brockton was led by Madison Meeks with six points, while both Aniya Barkley and Lacey Sprinkle scored two points each.

The Gamecocks closed out the regular season on the road against county foe Elba and went down swinging 55-52 to the Tigers.

After falling behind 12-7 in the first quarter and eventually 23-16 at halftime, the Gamecocks outscored the Tigers 21-19 in the third quarter to cut the lead to 42-37 heading into the final period.

The Gamecocks once again outscored Elba in the fourth quarter, 15-13, but it wasn’t quite enough as the Tigers held on to the 55-52 win.

New Brockton went 31.1 percent from the field, while Elba shot 40.4 percent, but New Brockton got a big bump at the free throw line. The Gamecocks went 10-of-18 at the line, while the Tigers struggled their way to a 7-of-24 shooting performance at the charity stripe.

New Brockton also outplayed Elba on the boards, outrebounding the Tigers 46-37 including 31 defensive rebounds.

The Gamecocks also forced 22 turnovers but turned the ball over 21 times themselves.

Walker scored 21 points to lead New Brockton along with grabbed 12 rebounds and dishing four assists.

Senior Julian Noble added nine points and six rebounds in the loss, while Kelty pitched in with seven points and five rebounds. Sophomore CJ Wilkerson scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds along with two assists and two steals.

Elba was led by Collin Harrison’s 20 points and five rebounds, while Chrys Caldwell added 16 points and 10 rebounds. Iverson Lane also had 14 points and six rebounds.

The Lady Gamecocks fell to Elba 60-17 in another frustrating loss. New Brockton fell behind 20-4 after the first quarter and 43-10 at halftime. Elba outscored New Brockton 17-7 in the second half.

Meeks led New Brockton with seven points, while Paula McKenna added five points.

New Brockton traveled to Goshen on Feb. 4 for the Class 2A, Area 4 Tournament against Zion Chapel in the opening round.
