The Enterprise Wildcats and Lady Cats got the 2020 tennis season off to a start on Friday, Jan. 31, with an appearance in the Auburn Invitational.
The Wildcats went 1-2 in the tournament with an 8-1 win over Austin along with 7-2 losses to both Auburn and Hewitt-Trussville.
Against Austin, Ayden Peterson picked up an 8-4 win over Cole Reynolds and Alex Nelson added an 8-1 win over Bryant Maze. Bradley Pouncey picked up an 8-1 win over Hayden Wynn and Evan Stewart won 8-6 over Dylan Montgomery.
Connor Morriss won 8-6 over Garrett Fee and Cameron Emerson fell to Sean Ambrose 8-6 in Enterprise’s only loss of the match.
In doubles action, Peterson and Pouncey beat Reynolds and Maze 8-3, while the tandem of Nelson and Stewart beat Wynn and Montgomery 8-0. In the final doubles set, Micah Smith and Judah Talley knocked off Ambrose and Free 8-4.
Nelson picked up an 8-6 win over Sunghun Cho against Auburn, while Pouncey earned an 8-6 win over Carter Chase in a tiebreaker after battling to an 8-8 tie initially. Those were the only two EHS wins against the Tigers.
Nelson defeated Hewitt-Trussville’s Harry Lee 7-5 in a tiebreaker after going to an 8-8 tie, while Pouncey defeated Brandon Towers 8-6. They were the only two to pick up wins in that match, as well.
In doubles play, Enterprise went 0-3 against both Auburn and Hewitt-Trussville.
The Lady Cats also went 1-2 at the tournament with a 6-3 win over Austin and 9-0 losses to both Auburn and Hewitt Trussville.
Against Austin, Grace Heim picked up an 8-1 win over Blakely Yates, while Katie Nelson won 8-1 over Kendall Bramblett. Hais Kokoszka also won 8-2 over Soli Sepulveda.
In doubles play, the tandem of Tori Ammons and Heim defeated Lily Covers and Sepulveda 8-5, while the team of Katie Nelson and Kokoszka beat Bramblett and Lane Williams by a score of 8-2.
EHS tennis will travel to Dothan to play Houston Academy this Thursday, Feb. 6.
