Troy University introduced Brent Jones as the school’s new Director of Athletics on Wednesday, June 12, promoting him from Deputy Director of Athletics of External Operations.
Jones came to Troy in 2017 after serving as Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs at Southern Miss. Jones was one of six candidates interviewed for the position.
“Since the inception of Trojan Athletics in 1909, nine athletic directors have served the university, and I have been privileged to appoint six of those,” Troy University Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr. said. “The applicant pool for this appointment was the strongest in our history. All six finalists were well qualified, and I believe all six will become Division I (athletic directors).
“At the end of the search process, we realized the best fit for us at this time is Brent Jones. Brent has a record of leadership success at the DI level, particularly in revenue generation. He was an All-American student-athlete, and he knows Troy University. I am proud to appoint Brent as the 10th (athletic director) in our history.”
In Jones’ role as Deputy Athletic Director, he oversaw marketing, communications, advertising, ticket sales, Troy Sports Properties, broadcasting, promotions, fan engagement, fan experience, branding, licensing and trademarks. Jones also served as sports administrator for baseball and scheduling for football.
“I am excited and honored to serve as the next Director of Athletics for Troy University,” Jones said. “Collectively we will work to continue our unparalleled success and momentum across all of our sports department.”
Jones is succeeding Jeremy McClain – who was in attendance at Jones’ introductory press conference – as athletic director following McClain’s departure to take over as athletic director for Southern Miss. Jones and McClain worked together previously at Southern Miss and when McClain took over as athletic director at Troy, he brought Jones with him.
“Troy is a special place and they are getting a special leader in Brent Jones,” McClain said. “His ability to build relationships, his energy, work ethic and his vast experience in college athletics makes him the perfect fit to lead the Trojans into the future.
“Rest assured that the sun will never set on a day that Jones hasn’t given everything he has to continue to help Troy reach new heights. There are bright days ahead for Troy Athletics.”
Before coming to Southern Miss, Jones had also previously worked at Georgia Southern where he was Director of Sports Marketing and Assistant Athletic Director.
During his two years at Troy, the school has set numerous attendance records in football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, softball and baseball. According to
Hawkins, Jones was also essential in the athletic department seeing its largest licensing revenue in school history with a 34 percent increase in funds and an 111 percent increase in the amount of retailers selling Troy merchandise. Hawkins also said that Troy has also set departmental records for revenue for corporate sponsorships and ticket sales since Jones took over those responsibilities.
