Both the Enterprise High School boys and girls golf teams return a number of top players from last season.
The Lady Cats finished as state runner-up last season and three of the top four golfers from that team return in 2020. Those three are seniors Emilia Smith, Ashley-Sinclair Curtis and Katie Smith.
Emilia Smith signed an athletic scholarship with UAB last year and will look to lead the way for a potential state championship run as a senior.
“We want to win the state, that’s our goal,” Enterprise coach Rex Bynum said. “We were runner-up last year and we have our sights set on a state championship.”
The Wildcats, on the other hand, return five of the top six players from a year ago, and they want to advance to the sub-state round of the state tournament this year.
“We have to get back to sub-state,” Bynum said. “We’ve missed it the last two years, so we’re working towards getting back to sub-state.”
The Wildcats are still very young as returners Brady Wood, Gibson Charlton, Nick Cook, Jackson Bailey and Bryant Burns will all be back in 2021, as well. The boys have no seniors in 2020.
With so many veterans back, Bynum hopes that some of the younger players can compete and push the others.
“All the boys are back so I will have some challenges for the bottom four (in the lineup),” he said. “I hope they do challenge because competition will only make us better.”
Bynum also pointed to sophomore Isabella Holtz as being a young player that can step into the No. 4 spot on the girls side.
Bynum emphasized that both teams have to get better in the short game if they want to reach their goals this season.
“The short game and scoring is what we have to work on,” Bynum said. “They can hit a long way but the greens and regulation is our first priority.
“The more green you hit the better your score is going to be. If you don’t hit the green you have to be able to turn three hits into two.”
