The New Brockton Junior High Gamecocks picked up a win over Kinston last week.

The New Brockton Gamecocks and Lady Gamecocks recently opened up the 2019-2020 basketball season with both teams falling in their games.

The Lady Gamecocks traveled to Ashford Nov. 15-16 to take part in the Bill Herbert Kickoff Classic. The Lady Gamecocks fell 64-22 to Ashford in the opening round.

Ashford jumped out to a 21-7 lead in the first quarter and eventually stretched that lead to 40-13 at halftime and then outscored New Brockton 24-9 in the second half, including 9-0 in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Gamecocks were led by senior Paula McKenna with 14 points in the loss, while Madison Meeks added eight points.

New Brockton closed out its tournament appearance with a 49-9 loss to Houston County on Nov. 16.

At halftime, the Lady Gamecocks trailed 24-6 but Houston County exploded to score 21 points in the fourth quarter to ultimately pull away for the win.

Destiny Flowers led the Gamecocks with seven points.

New Brockton then hosted its first game of the season as Wicksburg game to town on Monday, Nov. 18.

The Lady Gamecocks again couldn’t seem to get things going offensively but were able to keep themselves in the game defensively trailing 5-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Wicksburg was able to pull away a bit in the second quarter, taking a 12-5 lead into halftime but really jumped away by outscoring the Lady Gamecocks 27-5 in the third quarter. New Brockton was again outscored in the fourth quarter 8-0 and Wicksburg earned a 47-10 win.

Lacey Sprinkle led the Lady Gamecocks with four points.

The Gamecocks also met Wicksburg on Nov. 18 in their season opener and ultimately fell 65-46 after the Panthers pulled away late.

The two sides slugged it out in the first half with Wicksburg taking a 17-11 lead into the second quarter, but New Brockton outscored Wicksburg 16-14 in the second quarter to cut the lead to 31-27 at halftime.

The two sides slugged out again in the third quarter with Wicksburg outscoring the Gamecocks 13-9 in the period and taking a 44-36 lead into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, the Panthers outscored the Gamecocks 21-10 to earn the 65-46 win.

New Brockton was led by junior Dillon Kelty’s career-high 22 points, while senior Dalton Shehee chipped in with a career-high 19 points.

The Junior High Gamecocks picked up their first win of the season 27-23 over Kinston on Nov. 12. Baylon Foster led the Gamecocks with 17 points, while Payton Green added eight points. Hunter White also brought down nine rebounds.

The Gamecocks and Lady Gamecocks were scheduled to hit the road on Thursday, Nov. 21 for a showdown with rival Elba but that game has been rescheduled for Dec. 5.
