The New Brockton Gamecocks football team will give fans a sneak peak of what the team will look like under new coach Zack Holmes this Friday night as longtime rival Elba comes to town for the spring game.
New Brockton’s young team has shown improvement since beginning practice last week, according to Holmes.
“It’s a been a lot for them to learn in five days but from last Monday through Friday we drastically improved,” Holmes said. “They’re buying in and doing exactly what we ask them to do and being extremely physical out there. So, it’s been really good so far.”
New Brockton and Elba played every year from 2004 until 2017 when Elba moved down to Class 1A and the two sides did not play last season.
“Part of the reason I wanted to play this game is because Elba is a program with a storied tradition and year in and year out you can count on them to be a quality football program,” Holmes said. “I want to see us compete and go out and execute. One thing that we haven’t had to coach very much has been effort because they’ve been getting after it.
I want to see them put that effort on the game field this week and get us off to a good starting point to build from over the summer.”
Elba and New Brockton will play at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 17, at Gamecock Stadium in New Brockton. The varsity will play the first half followed by the junior varsity and junior high in the second half.
