The Enterprise State Boll Weevils and Lady Boll Weevils opened up the home portion of the 2019-2020 season on Tuesday, Nov. 19, and both picked up big wins.
ESCC opened up the day with a pep rally where as the teams were officially introduced to the student body.
After the men’s and women’s teams competed against each other in a 3-point contest, students then faced off in a skills challenge with some ESCC gear on the line.
Following that contest, students got to enjoy pizza and the new look of mascot Bo Weevil was also introduced.
“We had a great turnout,” ESCC coach Jermaine Williams said. “This was the first time we ever did this and I really enjoyed it.
“I think the kids really liked to be able to get on the floor and compete for some gear, too. As long as I’m hear we’re going to keep doing this.”
Williams said that he and the rest of the staff at the school were just trying to get the students more excited about basketball season.
“We want to get the student body interested and get them ready for our home basketball season to start,” Williams said. “We want to get them more involved with things and every home game we want to be able to give the students a chance to win some gear, too.”
The Lady Boll Weevils came in winless but picked up a big 67-64 overtime win over the previously undefeated Southern Union.
The two sides battled to a Southern Union 19-13 lead in the first quarter and the Lady Boll Weevils trailed 34-24 going into halftime.
ESCC dominated the third quarter, outscoring Southern Union 16-4, and took a 40-38 lead into the fourth quarter.
After neither team was able to earn a late bucket, the two sides ended regulation 58-58 tie. The Lady Boll Weevils outscored Southern Union 9-6 in the overtime period to pick up the win.
“The girls did really well,” Williams said. “I was happy with the way we fought back and stayed in the game early.
“Southern Union came in undefeated and has beaten some really good teams, so this was a big win for us. The girls played hard and with a lot of energy and we played better defensively.”
Ivy Turner led the Lady Boll Weevils with 22 points, while Jesslyn Culverhouse chipped in with 14 points and Enterprise native Gwen Mitchell scored 11 points.
The Boll Weevils followed up with 95-88 win over Southern Union, as well. The 95 points is the highest point total for the Boll Weevils this season.
Southern Union jumped out to an early 15-0 lead in the first half but ESCC rallied and cut the lead to 45-39 at halftime. The Boll Weevils outscored Southern Union 56-43 in the second half to take the victory.
“We let them jump on us early but we fought back and played our game,” Williams emphasized. “We started sharing the ball more in the second half and started playing better and harder.
“We have to continue to learn that we have to share the ball and that will make wins easier. We struggled a little bit on defense and we really have to get better there along with rebounding.”
ESCC was led by Mykil Wilson with 16 points and Jalen Smith added 14 points, while Jarrett Jenkins added 13 points and both Josh Graham and Demetri Galette chipped in with 11 points.
The Lady Boll Weevils will travel to Montgomery to play Faulkner on Nov. 22 and the Boll Weevils will host Bevill State on Nov. 23.
