Big3

Rapper Ice Cube’s 3-on-3 professional basketball league Big3 will begin its third season later this month and the 2019 season will see the league come to Alabama for the first time.

The Big3’s Week 3 games on July 6 will take place from Birmingham’s Legacy Arena. The Big3 is a 3-on-3 basketball league founded by rapper/actor Ice Cube and featuring a number of former NBA superstars in exciting, fast-paced basketball games.

Unlike the NBA and other leagues, the teams in the Big3 aren’t tied to any one city and instead the league travels from state to state each week playing three games in a particular city.

The games that Alabama’s fans will see are Three’s Company facing off with Tri-State, the Aliens vs. Ball Hogs and The Enemies against the Ghost Ballers. Other teams in the Big3 include the 3-Head Monsters, Bivouac, Killer 3’s, Power, Trilogy and Triplets.

Three’s Company is coached by WNBA Champion coach Michael Cooper, who also previously coached in the NBA’s D-League and in college for the USC Trojans.

The Big Three’s team captain is former Atlanta Hawk DeMarr Johnson and his co-captains are former NBA All-Stars Baron Davis and Drew Gooden.

Tri-State is coached by NBA Hall of Famer and legend Julius “Dr. J” Erving, who spent nearly 20 years as a superstar in both the ABA and NBA. He was an 11-time NBA All-Star and five-time ABA All-Star also winning the NBA’s Most Valuable Player Award once and the ABA’s MVP three separate times. He is known as one of the greatest basketball players ever. This is his second year as Tri-State’s coach.

Tri-State’s team captain is former NBA All-Star Jermaine O’Neal and his co-captains are former NBA All-Star Amar’e Stoudemire and three-time NBA Slam Dunk Champion Nate Robinson. Longtime NBA star Bonzi Wells was also drafted by Tri-State this season.

The Aliens are one of the Big3’s newest teams and are coached by former NBA All-Star Nate Archibald who will be in his first year as a head coach. Archibald has been an assistant coach in both the college and NBA ranks.

The Aliens team captain is former NBA player Andre Owens, who spent more than 10 years as a star in overseas leagues before coming to the Big3 in 2017 when he joined Three’s Company before signing with the Aliens. Former NBA star Shannon Brown is Owens’ co-captain and former first overall NBA Draft Pick Greg Oden is also on the team.

The Ball Hogs are coached by legendary NBA star Rick Barry. The team’s captain is former NBA star Brian Scalabrine and his co-captain’s are former NBA All-Stars Josh Childress and DeShawn Stevenson.

The Ghost Ballers are coached by former NBA All-Star George Gervin and captained by longtime NBA All-Star Mike Bibby. Fellow former NBA All-Stars Carlos Boozer and Ricky Davis are his co-captains.

The Enemies are coached by former NBA star Rick Mahorn. Mahorn was an assistant coach for the WNBA’s Detroit Shock when they won back-to-back WNBA Championships and he was named head coach of the Shock in 2009. Mahorn also led the Trilogy in the Big3’s inaugural season to the Big3 Championship.

Former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas is the team’s captain, while fellow NBA All-Star Lamar Odom and former NBA star Perry Jones III are co-captains.

Games will begin from Birmingham’s Legacy Arena at 5 p.m. on July 6.
