Teams from all over the state descended on Enterprise over the weekend to take part in a number of Dixie Youth State Baseball Tournaments, which included teams from Enterprise.

The Enterprise team in the Ozone Rookie State Tournament made it the farthest, falling to Troy in the quarterfinals.

Enterprise started off the tournament with wins over both Gordo and Troy in the first two rounds before falling to Dothan-American in the third round on July 7 in a heartbreaker. With the game tied 0-0 going into the bottom sixth inning Dothan was able to score a run to earn the win.

“We lost a heartbreaker last night to Dothan,” Enterprise coach Jeremy Boswell said. “Our pitchers battled their guts out all night and when you lose a heartbreaker like that you don’t know how they’ll come out and respond the next time.”

That loss meant Enterprise and Troy would rematch on Monday, July 8. Enterprise took a 3-1 lead over Troy into the bottom of the sixth and final inning, but with two outs and the bases loaded Troy was able to score runs on back-to-back hits to tie the score up 3-3.

Then on Troy’s next bat a single to left field drove in the winning run and eliminated Enterprise in another heartbreaking defeat.

“We came out and our pitchers and our defense gave us a chance,” Boswell said. “Maybe we needed a few more hits but I wouldn’t trade these 12 kids for any other 12 kids just because of the way they listened and responded and always respected each other and their coaches and took teaching.

“That’s what I’ll remember about this team; not whether or not we won the state championship. They came out and pulled for each other every night and never quit.”

Boswell called his team a “scrappy” unit and said that after starting out hot at the plate in the first two games they just simply went cold in the final two.

“We could have hit the ball a lot better but they kept fighting and kept scrapping all the way,” Boswell said. “We lost two heartbreaking games back-to-back in the last inning and that’s tough, but these kids are resilient and they’ll get over it and be stronger for it.”

In the Rookie AAA Tournament, Enterprise American earned wins over Hartselle and Southeastern Gray in the first two rounds before falling to Auburn-Montgomery in the third round. In the quarterfinals, Enterprise American earned a win over Dothan-American but then fell to Auburn-Montgomery again in the semifinals on Sunday, July 7.

In the Rookie AA Tournament, Enterprise National defeated Decatur in the opening round and Dothan American in the second round before falling to Auburn-Montgomery in the third round. In the quarterfinals, Enterprise National was eliminated by Troy.

On the other side of the bracket, Enterprise American lost to Hueytown in the first round and Montgomery National in the second round.
