Dear Editor:

As the holiday season quickly approaches we all know things will be different this year for everyone. I am, however, making a special request to everyone to reach out to our local veterans.

These folks are a proud independent bunch of men and women who unselfishly served our nation. All of us have benefited from the security they helped provide.

Sadly, many of these people are often forgotten during the holidays. They may be stationed here at Fort Rucker, may have retired here, in nursing homes or done their service and returned home. In any case, we should all be thankful for the safety and peace they all helped provide.

My suggestions are for you to reach out in a small way to those who served. Doesn’t have to be much, just so they know you care. Christmas cards put in mailboxes in you neighborhood, holiday greeting at the front door, a phone call, a gift card for food delivery or take out, an ornament, an email, or a post on Facebook.

What you do or how you do it is not important. The fact that you’re willing to reach out is what matters to these service members.

Happy holidays to you and yours. Stay safe!
