A lesson to be learned

Although it’s still as hot as ever, the sight of school buses, football schedules and back to school store specials reminds us that fall really is near. The season is one of my favorites, and one that makes me miss sitting with mom on the front porch of my family’s country home, coffee in hand, enjoying a late summer evening’s breeze as we talk about all the things between close mothers and daughters.

Give thanks for scars, deeper roots — and grow on

Chances are you’ve heard it said — or sung—that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. I recently came across a new take on the phrase, courtesy of the one and only Dolly Parton: “Storms make trees take deeper roots.” I believe the poet George Herbert actually deserves the original credit for the quote, which in his words reads, “Storms make oaks take deeper root.”

Leave your foxhole better than you found it

When I was in graduate school, one of my professors used to refer to the person each of us wants to be as our “aspirational self”—the self we aspire to be. Our aspirational self is our dream-self, if you will: consistently on time, in shape, a joy to be around, etc.

Hello! My name is Alexa Boehringer and I am the new reporter for the Daleville Sun-Courier and The Southeast Sun. My husband and I moved from Savannah, Ga., to Fort Rucker at the end of the year. We are very happy to be living and working in the Daleville/Fort Rucker community.
